Show students approximately the first minute of the video above on 2 people who are environmental scientists investigating contamination in a pool and then tell students they will be assuming the role of an environmental toxicologist and they need to determine what is in the neighbour's pool.
Activity:
Get students in groups of 3 or 4 to create a flow chart for their designated contaminants - inform them of 2 possible contaminants that are in their sample (preliminary testing has already been done). Flow charts can be created in Microsoft Office, Powerpoint, Excel or even Publisher, or using an online program. When complete, flow charts could be posted on the class website for students to review.
See the document below for possible contaminant combinations to give to students.
Curriculum Expectations: 2.1 Use appropriate terminology related to aqueous solutions and solubility 2.4 Conduct an investigation to analyse qualitative and quantitative properties of solutions 3.4 Identify, using a solubility table, the formation of precipitates in aqueous solutions
Give students a copy of the handout below, showing them how you can plan how to test for specific contaminants and go over it with the students.
